RIP Maurice Sendak (1928-2012)
One of the biggest influences on my life’s path to becoming an artist passed away today. Maurice Sendak was the mind behind Where The Wild Things Are —which is (and always has been) my favorite book in the world.
Thank you Maurice, for making me realize just how powerful my imagination was. — not to mention for being the very first illustrator I admired.
The above image is a quick sketch I did in preparation for a Maurice Sendak tribute piece I plan on drawing.
Terrible Yellow Eyes is a collection of artwork inspired by the picture-book by Maurice Sendak, Where The Wild Things Are—which is my favorite book of all time. The book was also one of the first things that really inspired me to become an artist, so anything related to WTWA has always hit close to home for me.
I know it’s easier to portray a world filled with cynicism and anger, where problems are solved with violence…It’s an easy out. What’s a whole lot tougher is to offer alternatives, to present other ways conflicts can be resolved, and to show you can have a positive impact on your world. To do that, you have to put yourself out on a limb, take chances, and run the risk of being called a do-gooder.
“Green Lights” by Aloe Blacc
One of my favorite songs of 2011. If you aren’t familiar with Aloe, you are missing out on one of the greatest voices of this generation. The word motivating doesn’t even begin to do justice to this beautiful, beautiful song.
The real source of happiness involves one’s state of mind, outlook, and motivation, and one’s level of warmheartedness towards others.
A friend of mine is planning a surprise bowling party for his grandpa’s 80th birthday, and asked me to create a caricature to be used on his t-shirt.
This is my newest flyer design for local hip-hop artist Loki’s upcoming Christmas concert. Admission for the event is free with the donation of a canned food—hence the drunken soup can.
Loki recently released a free mixtape, check it out here.
